At first Lariena is glad she has to spend the summer with her foot in a cast. It means she has a built-in excuse to stay out of the water at the beach. It's not the water that bothers her, but what might be below the surface. But then she meets Adrian. Lariena won't go in the water, and she can't understand why Adrian won't come out. Eventually Adrian teaches Lariena to face her fears and not be afraid of what's Beneath The Surface, even when it's the scary unknown.

"Hi." The boy appeared to be about seventeen or eighteen. He observed me with a sweet musing look. "I hope I didn't startle you."
"Oh, no," I answered quickly. I noted his large green eyes, the color of the ocean. I'd never seen eyes like his before. "I just didn't expect to find anyone swimming over here. Usually no one does."
"I didn't expect to find anyone sunning herself on these rocks either." The green eyes playfully surveyed me. "Usually no one does." He grinned. "By the way, my name is Adrian. "What's yours?"
"Lariena." Something about this guy, his bemused smile perhaps, or the faint twinkle in his green eyes, melted any distrust I might have felt at being approached by a stranger. At any rate, I figured I could make a quick getaway if I had to, since he would have to climb out of the water before he could grab me.
