Four years ago, Man-of-Action Horatio Bartholomew Fist closed the final chapter on the Zombie Slave War with the apprehension of the War's most notorious criminal, Arnold X. DemiGod. Now, DemiGod has turned up missing, and Fist finds himself on the trail of the vicious killer again. Armed with his merciless Dimensional Minimizer weapon, Fist and a showgirl named Pepper Shaker traverse the universe to hunt down DemiGod and stop him before he brings death, destruction and an unwilling army of cheap labor back to a civilization that thought those days of horror were over, forever.

In the future, there is only one government, one President, one galaxy-wide coalition. But there are still those who would threaten that fragile peace for greed, fame, or just for the hell of it. That's where Horatio Bartholomew Fist comes in.Fist is the most highly regarded member of Boris Cushing's M.O.A. Team. Officially, M.O.A. stands for "Mercenaries of the Alliance" but Fist prefers the colloquial term: "Men of Action." A veteran of the galaxy-dividing Zombie Slave War, Fist does battle with the against those who would shatter the universal peace enjoyed since the ZSW ended. Armed with his Dimensional Minimizer Model DMX0812, H.B. Fist strikes fear into the hearts of bad guys throughout the universe.

Excerpt

The lead zombie - the big guy - lurched forward suddenly, swinging a ham-sized fist in the direction of my forehead. I stepped back and the fist whistled by my face, missing by six inches. I could feel the wind from its passage on my cheek, however. I was right - the guy was powerful.

The other two zombies, agitated by their boss’s first strike, lunged forward as well. One of them bent at the waist and reached down for my ankle, hoping to pull me off balance. I caved in the back of his skull with one solid swing of the of the pickax shank. He went down like a rag doll, staring up at me with a pitiful, helpless look I knew all too well from my days on Black Diamond. He couldn’t move anymore - the areas of his brain that guided movement had been injured or destroyed - but he was still alive. And he would lay there like that, staring up at me helplessly, until some humanitarian came by and separated his head from his shoulders and pulled the spinal column from his torso.

    I’d get to that later.

A nanosecond flashback of that procedure on Black Diamond cost me dearly. Suddenly, the third zombie threaded his bony fingers through my hair and pulled me close. For a moment I lost my footing, then shifted my weight and tried to reverse our equilibrium. But he was too stocky and strong. Instead of wrenching him off balance, I felt myself being lifted off the ground. He had me completely in his control, like a ventriloquist and his dummy.

I hefted the pickaxe and tried to ram it into the zombie’s temple but it was no good. The angle was all wrong and the shank glanced off his forehead, opening a three inch gash there. It bled a clear crystal fluid in tiny droplets but his grip didn’t loosen.

I was helpless as the zombie lifted me above his head and threw me like a football. The spiral wasn’t half bad but I would have preferred landing in the end zone rather than the bleachers.

I slammed into a bed of rocks, their sharp edges tearing through my coveralls and ripping into my skin. Instantly, rivulets of blood began flowing warmly from a half dozen tiny wounds in my back and legs. A bruise was born in my ribcage and - as it grew to adulthood in a matter of seconds - I prayed it was only a bruise and not a broken rib.

Any prayers I offered went unanswered. The first zombie was on me in an instant, lifting me into the air and crushing my sides like one of those foam toys kids could squish into a ball and then release, watching as they regained their natural shape. I knew my natural shape wasn’t as resilient. My last gasps of precious air were being forced out of my lungs while at the same time they threatened to burst like over-inflated balloons. I tried to breathe but each time I did the zombie tightened his grip. Of all the zombies in the world, I thought later, I get the guy who studied boa constrictors in high school.

But they didn't plan on suffocating me. Instead, the second zombie stepped over his immobile partner, the guy I’d sacked with a crushing blow to the skull, and ripped the pickaxe shank out of my grip. I tried to hold on but my strength was ebbing by the second. Tiny, multi-colored spots danced before my eyes like a final fireworks display.

The zombie held up the shank, wielding it as though its sharp, metal top were still attached, and brought it down like a lumberjack splitting a redwood stump.

Through darkening eyes, I gasped for breath and waited for the flash of bright light and the white tunnel that would open up to take me to meet my maker.

"From the Burly Bee to Planet Debris, you're on a wild space chase with 'Man of Action' H.B. Fist and his trusty flapjacker. R. Scott Bolton's 'Killed By Death' is flat-out Sci-Fi fun."

Writer's Digest
Bolton's detective story within a science fiction setting is an interesting twist on this genre. There's some boyish imagination that comes through in the writing and the voice of H.B. Fist. His description of futuristic planets (e.g. Debris) and gadgets is fun and inventive. There are some gory elements, but it doesn't seem gratuitous and the author's humor keeps the story from being too dark.

While there is definitely adversity for H.B. Fist, he does seem invincible and I never quite got the feeling he was in serious jeopardy. Perhaps some more doubt in the character's thoughts and actions would make him more vulnerable. Maybe his suspicions about Boris, or possibly another ally (instigated by Pepper Shaker) could really rattle his cage and get the reader more involved in the suspense.

It took me a moment, after reading "Killed By Death" to understand the cover. While it seems appropriate to the story, it doesn't really grab the reader. It kind of looks like a book about bikers in space. The cover needs more of a futuristic and clean look that defines the type of story it is and catches the reader's eye.

Reader Reviews for "Killed By Death: From the Adventures of H.B. Fist"

I won KILLED BY DEATH in a contest at RoughEdge.com and was in the process of moving and did not get around to reading it until last night, where I finished the entire book. I really enjoyed it. My experience with science fiction does not extend far past King, Dick, and Asimov, but I found KILLED BY DEATH very interesting. It was not only compelling, but I found it rather funny also (I really liked how Arnold X brought death, destruction ... and incredibly cheap labor).

In the grand detective tradition of Mike Hammer, but with a science fiction twist, R. Scott Bolton's KILLED BY DEATH could very well be the guilty pleasure of the summer. Man of Action H.B. Fist is an instant favorite as he battles evil villians bent on galactic domination.

If I could have an HB Fist novel every summer, I could enjoy my vacation in literary bliss!
