A life history of the "Little Guys" in drag racing and hot rods with the backdrop set against the Southern California coast.
All taking place in the 50's to the early 60's and beyond.

A partial and slightly paraphrased quote from the back page:
"California Hot Rodder" is a chronicle of life in the 50's and beyond. California was a hot bed of drag racing activity in the mid-fifties and Jay and his friends were there from the start. they weren't high profile racers, just hot rod kids emulating their heroes. Stories range from early days drag racing to recent years as well as stories about growing up on the Southern California coast.
From Chapter 24 - "The Black Hat"
Sometimes it's interesting how people remember you. maybe it's just a small case of fame and fame in a small circle for the most part. Bein really famous looks like a total drag to me. Better to be well known as a bit of a character with family and friends than to end up being owned by the world.

In this case, what was remembered, was not so much a guy in a black hat, but simply the black hat itself.....

My son wants you to adopt him! I don't want to part with him so I'll just buy him your book and see if that will pacify him! And if I can pry the tome from his grease-stained hands, I'll read it myself because it sounds intriguing!

Jay, I had to come visit your site and now I find that you and my husband would probably get along famously! You have experienced an icon of Americana that most only dream about. Thankfully you have also shared of your experience with us. I will enjoy reading your book - however, I will probably have to fight my husband for it! Abundant blessings!

Oops, I Lost my Sense of Humor by Lois Santalo

Death came for me in 2001 in the form of pancreatic cancer. Doctors advised against surgery due to my age--but I felt that even an extra year or two is worth fighting and suffering..
