Like the flash and dart of dragonflies, other busy lives surround ours as we prance unaware through our own world. Each absorbing story portrays a powerful sense of place, even when life's smaller crises are held up to the light. It is the everyday challenges that define us, after all. From the joys and exasperations of daily living to magical realism, from Old Man Shever to The Refuge, these 17 stories weave a colorful tapestry of life's discoveries.
Excerpt
And today he did not feel the blue eyes intensely staring at him, did not sense the presence shrinking back into the cleft of the rocks when he screamed, did not respond to the prickly vibrations in his skin telling him he was being watched, studied. Such feelings were alien here, where no one else came. His laugh rang out again now, swirling in the wind and mist around his ears. The pounding surf as it broke on the black rocks, the roar of the wind, the kaa-ing and mewing of gulls and keer-ing of terns being swept inland, the startled flap of wings as his footsteps disturbed the few sandpipers and stilts still brave enough to stiffly walk the fringe of the waves hunting crustaceans. All were music to him.

Seventeen curious stories, interesting perspectives with outcomes both redemptive and possible, Shirley Ann Parker definitely has an ear for dialogue, & a charming turn of phrase.
