Henry Berry, The Small Press Book Review
Michelle Nichols is a 15-year-old author who writes about her wish to own horses when she gets older. The first illustration by Dana Conklin, an award-winning artist active in many art associations, shows a young girl on a horse's back with her arms around its neck. The author is so enthusiastic about owning horses one day she wishes for "one billion," and says she likes horses no matter what their color. But she is realistic about the rewards as well as the chores of owning horses. She likes them because they run fast, are wild, can do tricks, and can help in roping cattle. But she knows she will also have to feed and groom her horses to take care of them properly. At the end, she decides that "maybe I'll just have seven horses."
Conklin's lively color illustrations range from naturalistic views of horses to imaginative images, such as the illustration representing the wild
nature of horses. Nichols' simple words about her wish to own horses and the reasons for this along with Conklin's evocative illustrations articulate the fascination with horses for many young persons. More broadly than this as well, such readers from pre-schoolers to fourth graders will relate to the connection between Nichols' childhood impressions and her vision of her future.

This would be a fabulous book for children!! I had a horse when I was young ... and must say it truly was what dreams are made of. I've written a series of children stories called 'Come Fly With Me', story 6 is 'Meeting wild horses', where our Australian brumbies on friends fly across oceans & skies to meet mustangs!!
I hope to see more of your work one day!
Love Suzie xox :-) |
