Introduction: Following the Animal Tracks to Spirituality (Excerpt from What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild and Tame Creatures by Diana L. Guerrero.)

Animals serve as our link to the intuitive and to the divine. You cannot be around animals for any amount of time and not learn something. For me, this means those hidden lessons beyond the pragmatic training relationships and application of behavior theories.

In this book I will give you tools: methods and examples designed to give you a better understanding of animals; the knowledge necessary to achieve clear communication, and establish mutual respect; and illustrations of how animals help us touch into our spiritual natures and catalyze our growth. Each level of growth ties into all the others, for we are a complete unit, not segments.

All chapters introduce you to the feathered, finned, scaled, and furred creatures who served as my students and teachers. Each section incorporates more animals than the one whose name graces the chapter title and within each piece are illustrations of other lessons on the particular rung on the ladder of spiritual growth.

There are seven archetypal symbols of spiritual maturation as humans ascend toward the divine. Personally, I find it simpler to use the analogy of climbing a spiritual ladder. Every rung contains specific lessons, and as you complete each module, you step up to the next level. However, each time a ladder is used you might go up and down multiple times. The same is true of our growth; sometimes we repeat the lessons until we get them.

In organizing this book I designed the first seven book chapters to represent seven archetypal rungs. The first rung includes basic survival beliefs, while spiritual matters such as acts of faith, prayer, and meditative thought patterns comprise the seventh.
“Loyalty of the Dog” introduces us not only to dogs, but also to elephants, a sea lion, musk oxen, and some fabulous felines. In discussions about relationships, there are stories related to responsibility, balance, fairness, integrity, power, loyalty, honor, and justice.

“Playfulness of the Otter” illustrates the importance of hard work, relaxation, and play. In addition to taking a close look at our rapport with others, this chapter explores the inner child, physical desires, and work. We’ll look at control, judgments, emotions, creativity, and the energy behind choices while guided by a menagerie of canines, marine mammals, a horse, and a cat.

“Power of the Polar Bear" seduces us into the world of physical power and emotional strength and impels us to investigate intuition, empowerment, self-acceptance, and confidence. Bears, cats, insects, and coyotes escort us.

“Heart of the Lion” helps us to delve into compassion and love while reminding us to focus on our relationships, and urging us to face our adversaries. You’ll meet TJ the mongrel, and glimpse the world of animal rescue and dog training.

“Call of the Wolf” is purely a canine discourse where wolves and domestic dogs lead the way through surrender, confession, acceptance, how to listen, and tuning into nature.

“Vision of the Eagle” helps us to look at far-sightedness, inner vision, detachment, discernment, mindfulness, and letting go. Eagles, pelicans, bats, and bears serve as our instructors.

“Mind of the Dolphin” encourages us to probe into the topics of harmony, synchronicity, and the importance of breathing. Our conductors include both domestic and wild animals.

The eighth chapter has a different role from the first seven. “Wisdom of the Owl” is practical instruction about how to develop your skills to connect with animals, and ultimately with the divine.

Finally, the Afterword is designed to stimulate your thoughts about animals in the afterlife. “Creatures of the Divine” briefly examines the question of animal souls. Join me on this quest and discover what animals can teach us about spirituality.

Spirit of Change Magazine Review

Since ancient times, humankind has understood that animals serve as a link to the intuitive and to the Divine. What Animals Can Teach Us explains how humans can learn from animals new ways to tap into their own spiritual nature. Author Diana Guerrero, a respected animal behaviorist, gives anecdotal examples of animal behavior from many years of therapy, animal training and research demonstrating the lessons we can learn from creatures both wild and tame. Her stories include animals from owls to otters to porpoises to polar bears. The lessons to be learned include embracing change positively, unconditional acceptance, living in the now, moving past fear and bringing out the best in each other -- traits which we normally associate with humans only. With practical and meaningful advice, Guerrero helps us understand why animals inspire and touch our souls, plus guides us to opening up to communication with our animals on a much deeper level.

Learn from Spiritual Animals
What Animals Can Teach Us About Spirituality will do more than that. It provides insights into the self and strengthens your spirituality whether animals are part of your life or not. And if you are an animal lover, it reinforces the bonds you already enjoy with animals, domestic and wild.
Rita Robinson, author of 11 books, including Exploring Native American Wisdom (2003)

An Animal Lover's & Spiritual Seeker's Dream

I loved this book, and am making sure every animal lover I know gets a copy. Guerrero combines her passion and expertise as an animal trainer and healer with a spiritual philosophy that will open a door into a world of magic, myth and personal discovery! If you’ve ever experienced that special connection with the animal kingdom, then this book is a must-read! And, if you haven’t—then this book is especially for you.

Integrating Mind, Body & Spirit w/ domestic and wild animals

Reviewer: Dr. Larry Lachman from Monterey, California, United States

Guerrero is in the unique position of integrating mind-body-spirit for both the homo sapien biped readers and the variety of domestic and wild animals she writes about from her actual hands on experience which parallels her own personal journey of personal tranformation. Highly Recommended!

A "have to have" for any animal lover or spiritual seeker!

Reviewer: Angela Carolyn from Big Bear City, California, United States

This book is a touching collection of stories about animals and their humans--and how animals have helped them. Chapter 8 is a valuable handbook that helps develop a better understanding of animals and improve your relationships with ALL animals.

This book has many layers. In it the author shares her insights--which is no small task as she has worked with wild and domestic animals for over twenty-five years. She reveals many interesting animal behavior secrets (and her own stories too). I cried when I read the Afterword when the author talks about animal souls and her final journey with her beloved canine. I've purchased a bunch to give as gifts and recommend that you do, too!

Don't miss this book!

The Deep Connection Between Animals and Humans
Reviewer: Libby Grande freelance writer from California, United States

Diana Guerrero’s inspiring book,'What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality', affirms the deep connection between animals and humans. Each chapter reveals how animal behavior mirrors our own spiritual journey, one of the many intriguing concepts in this extraordinary book. Anyone who loves animals will recognize thoughts they have had regarding their rapport with and respect for animals. It is exciting to have those ideas explored and explained by a reputable animal behaviorist. Ms. Guerrero asks her readers to open their minds and hearts to teachers in all guises. This book is the perfect gift for animal lovers.

A Warm and Wonderful Read
Review by Robena June Schaerf (author of Granton Manor and Morgan's Ridge)from Australia, January 30, 2004

A beautifully written glimpse into the psyche of both humans and animals. As a writer I enjoyed Ms Guerrero's descriptions of her personal interactions with both tame and wild animals and felt very much a part of her adventures. Prior to reading Diana's book I thought I knew my buddy, a 100lb Akita, very well. Now I not only notice my dog's subtle clues but have a greater understanding of their meaning. This is a "must read" for all lovers of the spiritual messages of nature.

Learn From the Animals
Reviewer: Kristin Johnson (author of Christmas Cookies Are For Giving & poet) from Palm Desert, California, January 16, 2004
Don't think that Diana Guerrero advocates a new spiritual fad in advocating that we humans emulate animals. Aesop knew you can't be a human in dog's clothing. Guerrero asks us to stop, turn off the computer, TV, cell phone, and most of all our mental noise, and get attuned to the fundamentals through our animal teachers. She strikes the right balance between addressing humans' shortcomings and addressing the positive and negative qualities of animals. Authoritative, with intelligent discourse on nature, zoology, animal and human behavior, and religious teachings, this book is a great addition to your library as you search for higher meaning.

This is an often touching, heartfelt read for any animal lover who has ever wondered about animals and their feelings. If you have an animal companion you must read this book!

Ms. Guerrero has a magical way with animals and with words. I found her book to be an easy and enjoyable read - reminding me of the profound interconnection of life and the incredible wisdom to be learned from our fellow creatures. I loved the personal, heartwarming stories she shares to illustrate the lessons.

Reader Reviews for "What Animals Can Teach Us About Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons From Wild &"

Reviewed by Joey Lawsin 9/7/2008
It is true that we have learned a lot from animals. However, one that people can not learned from them is the meaning of life. Animals spend most of their time everyday playing around and a portion of their day finding food? Man spend most his time finding money and experience fun less(usually on weekends only). Why are these creatures so different from us? Is it because they think they are intellectually superior than us and they just laugh at us behind?

Why can not we learn from our "animal ancestors"? Most of these animals have been here before us. Do they already know the secret of life? Have they been telling this secret to us ever since and yet we are simply blind to notice it. Or maybe because we presumed we have the highest intelligence, we just ignore these low life forms. Remember that velcro (a self-adhesive fasteners) and every tool that we have, all these ideas were copied from them. We might not have "fly" to the moon, or "swim" in the deepest ocean, if these animals were not present in the first place. And as we replace the evolution of mankind by technology, there is no more chance that our leg muscles could evolve like a kangaroo's leap, or like a cheetah's run or our back muscles to become wings. Maybe it is high time now to appreciate them, to know them better or simply observe them and think about life the way they see it.

But Human Beings are stubborn. They prepare war, they prepare killing each other, they prepare famine, they prepare innocent children to die, they prepare cancer, and they prepare to poison the world. And because of their beliefs - God, Science and Politics - they prepare to destroy life. Are we really intelligent enough or we just pressumed we are?
