Mark Kendrick, Novelist

This is Book III of an single extended novel.

Kallen Deshara has discovered his world’s origin, nature, and destiny; and has fallen madly in love with Aaric Utzman in 1820. His decision to stay with Aaric, knowing full well that his presence might change all of history, brings him to the very edge of reality. But his colleagues who have returned to the 25th century have other plans. They intend to bring him back before he changes anything, even if it means killing him. But first they have to find him.

Traveling along the Wilderness Trail with his new companion, Kallen is totally unaware he’s being stalked. In the meantime, he realizes what had been missing his whole life, deepens his love with Aaric, and sees more water than he thought possible. Slowly but surely, he recognizes that he has more to offer than he ever knew. In fact, he may even be able to shape the future that should have been!

But Kallen learns an even more important lesson. He discovers that love knows no boundaries—not even of time itself.

This second volume completes the tale.

Excerpt

Sunday, June 25, 1820

Kallen raced downslope in the direction of the river. Tears streamed down his cheeks, exacerbated by the wind as he sprinted. He knew he had to get out of the line of sight of the detonators.

If the EMF pulse went off and he didn’t have enough earth between them and the equipment, every device he had would be rendered useless. A branch whipped his cheek as he ran past it. His hands were sweating. His legs were just about to give out.

Finally, completely out of breath, and several hundred meters from the campsite, he fell backwards down the slope, sliding in the leaves. He landed heavily against the weight of his pack and the medkit, which he’d somehow managed to still have hold of.
He started bawling like a child, his chest heaving with great sobs. The tremendous tug-of-war that had been playing in his mind would not let him be. His love for Aaric made him have to stay behind. Yet his duty to the ADF weighed heavily on him, too. But his sense of duty was tempered by what he had learned only recently. He knew it all now. His base commander was a crook. The President of the NAA was in cahoots with him. And everything he’d learned about the Great Climate Change was a lie. All of it swirled and mixed in his head, causing him more anguish than he’d ever felt in his life. He couldn’t have gone back with them. He couldn’t! Not with what he knew. Not with how he felt. And not now, when his life had a meaning beyond anything he’d ever known before.

Whooomp!

The detonators had activated. The EMF pulse had been initiated. Kallen turned over onto his stomach. The full weight of his pack was directly on top of him. He pulled his arm to his face and touched the button on his wristcomm. The display lit up. Thank God! He was far enough away and had gotten enough ground between himself and the converter for the pulse to have had no effect on it. Luckily, too, the converter had been inside that rock formation, thus affording him more insulation from most of the radiation anyway.

He unsnapped the pack straps and the heavy mass rolled off his back. The distress he felt seemed unimaginable. Snot was dripping out of his nose from having cried so much. His short locks matted to his forehead from sweat and his entire face was wet with sweat and tears. He rolled over onto his back again, hardly able to catch his breath. He made fists, then lay his head back in the leaves. He was unable to stop the tears or the horrible wrenching feeling inside.

The wind overhead swayed the branches of the sun-dappled leaves. If it had been another situation he would have felt relaxed laying in the woods like this. Not now. Senji’s words replayed in his mind. ‘As soon as the power is cycled off and the processor is de-energized we can never come back.’

Even if they hadn’t de-energized the processor, the EMF pulse would have surely made short work of it–if the portal was still open at the time.
The portal was closed now for sure.
Kallen knew escape was sealed off forever. What have I done? I’ve just ruined my life. The wrenching feeling he felt changed to a stabbing feeling in his stomach. Even lying on the ground, he doubled up in pain.

A few moments later the pain eased somewhat and he got to his knees. Terribly hot now, he shed his camo shirt. It landed in the leafy debris inside out in his struggle to remove it. He crawled a few meters up the slope, attempting to stand, but couldn’t. He tried to hold back the tears as they started again. I can’t cry now. Not now. But he felt completely lost. Indeed, he was; centuries from home, kilometers from the nearest civilization.
