Margaret grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin. As a child, she always had dreams of traveling to different countries. After undergrad, she taught first grade in Wisconsin for four years, served one year as a lay missionary, and spent eight years in the interior of Venezuela teaching for Orinoco Mining Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel. During these years, she traveled extensively worldwide. After the company's nationalization, she returned to the United States, completed her MS.
