When high school principal Jerry Egge is brutally murdered, Deputy sheriff Dave Jenkins begins an eerie investigation. Just about everyone in Soldier, Minnesota, is a suspect.

When high school principal Jerry Egge sets out on his morning jog, he spots a red scrawl on the water tower, suggesting he sexually abuse himself. Besides Jenkins, SOLDIER'S GAP includes multiple characters such as Mingo Jones, the night deputy and Moe Plesiac, Jenkins' genius of a young neighbor for whom he acts as a substitute father or unrelated older brother, whichever you perceive. The interplay between these characters and the sharp dialogue furnish most of the humor. Mingo, for instance, minored in Native-American religion while playing LaCrosse at Johns Hopkins (the Mescaleros invented the game) and is now so immersed in the religion (they believe in ghosts) that he believes Jerry Egge, the principal, is stuck between the Shad | | | | Soldier's Gap
Soldier's Gap is a non-traditional mystery with literary elements. The high school principal is brutally murdered, but Deputy Sheriff Dave Jenkins's search for meaning and love is a much more significant theme.

When Deputy Sheriff Dave Jenkins arrives at Principal Jerry Egge's murder scene, he has a spiritual experience. Egg's life flashes before his eyes, so to speak. Anybody knows the murder victim is supposed to have this experience, not the investigator. Jenkins doesn't believe it. He can't afford to; if he tells anyone, he'll lose his job.
