Gil Saenz's poetry covers a wide range of themes from love, moonlight, fantasy,beauty, nature, time, and the religious-spiritual. His writing style changes depending on the subject and mood of a particular poem. It is sometimes rhymed or unrhymed and may also be free verse or contemporary/experimental. "Being creative by using words in unique ways has been a rewarding and enjoyable pastime."


Background Information

Gil Saenz has been writing and publishing his poetry since the mid-1980's. He had been a member of the Detroit based Latino Poets Association until its recent disbanding. Also, today and since 1999 he has been loyal member of the Downriver Poets and Playwrights in Wyandotte, Michigan.

By virtue of being a member in the Downriver Poets and Playwrights, he is also a member of the Poetry Society of Michigan and the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc. 

He has participated in many formal poetry readings in and around the Detroit area. Recently he did a reading across the border in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.   To date, he has published six of his own collections of  poems.  He regards poetry as a skill and a craft which he contnues to attempt to improve and perfect.

World Poets Award -awarded by J. Mark Press, Barbara Fischer, Editor in July, 2000.
Received B.A. w/English Lit major in 6/68 from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI.
He once was employed with the U.S. State Dept. in the Foreign Service as U.S. Diplomatic Courier from 4-69 to 10-70. Performed extensive travel overseas in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Also, in 2003 he worked as the editor of an antholgy entitled "THE OTHER SIDE OF DARKNESS - DBSA ANTHOLOGY - which is a collection of writings of persons who belong to a support group called the Depressive & Bipolar Support Alliance -DBSA (formerly MDDA) of Metro Detroit. It was published in April, 2003. He had assistance with the editing from the MDDA Arts & Literary Committee. The anthology consists mostly of poetry, but there are some articles and short personal accounts. It is made up of thirty-four contributors.
Gil is a past Chapter President, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the DBSA, Depressive Bipolar Support Association of Metro Detroit.
Also, Gil was a representative and past President and Vice-President of the Detroit Federal Executive Board and the Hispanic Employment Program Subcommittee from the 1980's until his recent retirement in 2004 from government service.
Gil also served as an officer and representaive of the HIRE (Hispanic Internal Revenue Employees)Michigan Chapter from the mid-1990s until his recent retirement.
He has also been a member of the U.S. Diplomatic Courier Association.
He has served as Treasurer for the Poetry Society of Michigan since 2005 until the present time.

Recently published poetry includes SPACES IN BETWEEN(03)and POEMS OF LIFE/Poemas de la vida (01)(bilingual-Enlish and Spanish, DREAMING OF LOVE (99) Sixty-five poems all with a theme or viewpoint of love. LAVENDER AND LACE(98)-co-authored with Jacqueline Sanchez MOMENTS IN TIME (95) Forty poems with twenty illustrations by artist, George Perazza. Explores types of "moments" in our lives.
