Professionally, he has worn many hats, from working as a copyeditor in academic publishing to serving as a quantitative analyst in an advisory capacity. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the now-defunct TheAlchemyPost, a magazine he co-edited with Jim Dunlap, a prominent poet from Des Moines, Iowa.
