Jafar Alam was first introduced to the world of poetry in 2003. Through the influence of two friends, he was shown the world of Persian and Arab poetry and the works of such greats as Rumi, Hafez, Shabistari, Darwish and many more.
He began performing spoken word in 2007, and later developed a taste for urban poetry, having been inspired by the writings of such brilliant minds as Langston Hughes, Sonia Sanchez and Saul Williams.
In March 2012, Jafar published his debut book of poetry "Almond Eyes Hears The Dove's Cries".
He is a two time Slam Poetry champion and the recipient of a 2008 Artistic Achievement Award.
Alam mentions several artistic influences, including: Charles Bukowski, Saul Williams, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bob Marley, Mahmoud Darwish, Alice Walker, Audre Lorde, Bell Hooks, Anaais Nain and Rumi.
