The long road to writing the story...
15 years of policing - cops are professional writers. Report writers. First draft narratives only. Tell a story, write it, hand it in. Thousands of stories. Became a best-selling Canadian police textbook author - 19 editions of six textbooks over 15 years. Batting 1000 with publishing contracts. Never rejected - including almost 200 law enforcement articles to policing magazines. Then, 20 years of college teaching, lecturing to those who want to be cops. Mix in 39 seasons of coaching football to Canadian student-athletes. Take the collegiate-aged ones to the USA to compete. Throw is three decades of lifting weights and strength coaching to help those athletes win a game in the USA. Start a business - a gym with a small writing office in the back corner.
Branched out from policing textbooks to football coaching books to tell the world about my football coaching system - the first no-huddle spread offense with limitless plays but no playbook. Follow that with another book about my limitless defensive system - again, no playbook. Then, complete the football system series with a unique book about strength training - the psychology and philosophy of working out for 40 years - without steroids.
The direction of the road became clear - a revelation. Write a true story about my meek and mild Canadian football team, trying to compete in the USA, at the collegiate level against some real Goliaths. Football on the surface, 4th & Hell Season 1 is a combination of inspirational and cautionary tales from lessons learned about oneself when cultures clash. Lessons about the power of conformity versus the power of being different. The fear of assimiliating versus the fear of isolation. The struggle between originality and adapting. The fight between leading or following.
The book tells the story of a what a culture shocked football coach calls a miracle. Sea is the first book of the 4th & Hell series.
