As the son of an Apostolic Pentecostal preacher and devout Christian songstress, Derric an African American child growing up in Detroit, paid little attention to the spiritual practices conducted in his church and community.  As a  teenager, searching for ways to escape the crack cocaine epidemic that devastated Black and Latino communities across the county in the mid-1980s.  He was led to embark upon a long and arduous spiritual quest that would teach him about his divinity, racial and cultural heritage. It was through this walk with the help of his ancestors (particularly his grandparents) he discovered the maa aankh, a spiritual blueprint based upon the Ancient Africans of Egypt's concepts of birth-life-death and rebirth, that showed how anyone can improve their life by tapping into the Power of God. Written by an actual spiritual practitioner in a straight-talk manner that has learned from overcoming his personal trials and tribulation, MAA AANKH: Finding God the Afro-American Spiritual Way, by Honoring the Ancestors and Guardian Spirits, asks and answers the questions that many have desired to know such as: "Why are we here?" "What's the purpose of living?" "What is our destiny?" "Is there a heaven/hell and how do you know?" "Who is God?" and "Where is God?" Using hymns, gospels, rhythm and blues, hip hop, afro-pop, salsa, folklore, history and mysticism to simplify the complex puzzle of spirituality.  By learning from numerous people such as his friend Fred, a Five Percenter, who first taught him about Knowledge of Self; to an old Cuban babalawo (Santeria high priest) who teaches him about the importance of his cultural heritage and the tenets of using a bóveda (spiritual altar).  Moore learns that we are all made in the image of God, have aakhu (ancestors) and netcharu (guardian angels/spirits) that guide and protect us in this sea of life.  Moore recalls in this vivid, entertaining, historical and spirited memoir how he enjoyed going to church as a child but lost his faith in God during the turbulent 1980s, only to slowly reclaim it little by little by overcoming pruebas (spiritual tests), including homelessness, bad relationships and even a bout with the debilitating ill-ness lupus.  It is through his search to find God he learns about his family's heritage and the importance of preserving his family tradition in order to protect the family institution.
