"Easy reading is damned hard writing. - Nigel Hawthorne

Background Information

I'm married with two children. I practiced criminal law in Montreal for 24 years, and have been an avid reader all my life. Every so often I have given free rein to my creative muse by writing short stories, some of them good, some not so good. After many attempts, and more misses than hits, I completed my first novel, The Guilty, which is available through Amazon and most book selling sites.

Topbookreviewers.com called The Guilty an absolute winner of a debut mystery novel." Bookpleasures.com called The Guilty "completely captivating." You can read these reviews and more by clicking on the links below.

In writing The Guilty I pictured the main character, Robert Bratt, a top-notch criminal lawyer, as someone who is essentially a good person, but whose need to win has led him to forget his inherent honesty, and driven him to do things that he wished he hadn't. This story is about how, after twenty years of doing whatever was needed in the defense of the most hardened criminals, he begins having conflicting feelings about himself and his profession, at the same time he is hired to defend a young gang member accused of a double-murder.
The book is loosely based on a multiple-murder that occurred in Montreal in the 1990s, and the story takes the reader into the inner workings of a murder trial to reveal what one lawyer must do when he has to defend The Guilty.
I've included the first chapter of The Guilty in my books section. Please comment freely on it.

My new novel is Face/Mask; this time I jump forward 25 years, to look at Montreal and the rest of the world at a time when the environment is becoming toxic, the war on terror rages on without end, and a militaristic government curtails civil rights at will. It's a world where people have to wear masks against the poisonous air, as well as to hide their true selves. Face/Mask is now available through Amazon and other sites. I've also included an excerpt to so you can check it out and let me know what you think.

I have also included an excerpt of my novella, If I Should Die Before I Wake, which is available on Kindle from Amazon.com for 99 cents. Although it's mostly a crime story, it does tend a bit toward the fantastic. (Sort of a mix between The Fugitive and The Twilight Zone.)
I was inspired to write this story one day thinking about how real some dreams can be. The thought came to me that if a dream is real enough the people inside it might have lives of their own, and they might sleep and dream as well, only they would dream of "us" in the "real" world. So I decided to write a story where there are two main and very opposite characters: one is a weak, frightened mob accountant on the run, and the other is a strong, cold-hearted killer who is after him. Only, they are really two parts of the same person; each character only exists in the dreams of the other, so that, in time, the distinction between who is a dream and who is real becomes blurred.

Among my short stories you can find Out of the Sun, originally published as part of a very creepy anthology called Danse Macabre: Close Encounters With the Grim Reaper, released by Edge Publishing. It is available in paperback, as well as ebook. The stories are written by some great writers (and I managed to get in there too somehow) who take some highly original looks at how we interact with the Grim Reaper. You can order the anthology through Amazon.com., or other book-selling sites. You can read the short story on my author page.
