Background Information

In Travelers: The Meaningful Journey, Régent Jean Cabana takes readers on a soul-affirming journey, making a strong case that the world outside, the one we travel into, responds to the world inside, the world we carry in our hearts and souls.   Cabana draws on both old and new age wisdom to illustrate the unique qualities of each individual traveler, while at the same time exemplifying the universal appeal and symbolic strength of the figure of “Traveler” as portrayed throughout the ages.   Everyone is a Traveler or wants to be a Traveler at some point in their lives.  The figure of the Traveler—spelled with a capital T to distinguish it from other travelers such as tourists or vacationers as well as to highlight its power of metamorphosis—is one with universal appeal that has carried tremendous symbolic strength throughout the ages and one that continues to eloquently speak to us today.  We see life as a journey and ourselves as Travelers on its path.   In this original book about life on the road and traveling as a metaphor for our life journey, the author juxtaposes his adventurous and humorous travel stories around the world with a prolific ethnographic research on Travelers he conducted from 1997-1999 for his Ph.D. dissertation.  He uses his own experiences and those of other Travelers to shed light on the factual and hidden nature of travel, its transformative power, the enjoyment and hardship it brings as well as the life lessons it imparts.     Régent is uniquely qualified to write such a book.  Travel is his passion and has been his calling since he went to Spain and Morocco at age eighteen.  At 33, he made his childhood dream of circling the globe a reality when he commenced an eighteen-month journey traveling solo around the world.  He is a trained social scientist and a student of world religions, history and philosophy.
