Thirty years after I was medevaced home from an ambush in the Mekong Delta I wrote Muddy Jungle Rivers, "A river assault boat cox'n's memory journey of his war in Vietnam and return home." It was published in 2012. In January 2010 my mother died and left behind a time capsule of family history locked in our old homestead chickenhouse in northern Minnesota. I spent three years reading, organizing, scanning, archiving, and researching primary documents that date back to 1822; thousands of pages of letters, picures, diaries, scrapbooks. In researching my past, I have discovered three generations of family members who have struggled with mental illness--mine is the fourth. Each Sunday evening I update my blog with another glimpse of my discoveries. The articles are titled, "Chickenhouse Chronicles." My goal is to write a series of biographical memoirs based on the rich treasure I have. Hemingway's Boat by Paul Hendrickson, is a fine example of what I hope to emulate--primary text quotes woven with author reflection, historical facts, and a search of the character's motives.
