I am a Haitian-American writer and photographer born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Mexico City and Miami. As you might imagine, things are pretty mixed up in my head. My writing is heavily influenced by politics, especially the residue of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America during the days of the Cold War. I write about place: Cuba, Mexico and Haiti, and the 'average' people who are living the consequences of failed political leadership: dictators, exile, the drug wars, corruption, etc.  My stories and novels fluctuate between drama and humor. I write from the heart and try to keep it real. I want to give readers a story they can hold on to with interesting characters and a few surprises. My writing is by nature sparse and without fluff. I like a fast read with punch. My influences are John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Cormac McCarthy, Junot Diaz, James Ellroy, Gabriel Garica Marquez, Graham Greene.

I hold an MFA in creative writing from the University of South Florida. I've been awarded the Chris O’Malley Prize for Fiction from the Madison Review and received an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant, a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship in Literature from the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs, and a John Ringling Towers Grant in Literature from the Sarasota County Artist Alliance.
