May all people experience love, understanding, and live free. May everyone share their stories. May poetry and jazz flourish forever.

Background Information

Bruce Lader's full-length book, Discovering Mortality (March Street Press, 2005), is about family, sex, death, war, and social concerns. A member of the NC Poetry Society, he has co-founded four on-going writers' groups, one in continuous existence since 1992. Bruce has given poetry workshops and remains available to organize them for any interested group. The writings of Stephen Dunn, Mary Oliver, William Matthews, C.K. Williams, and many others have influenced his work. Deep loves for education, jazz, nature, freedom, movies, and his wife, Renata (not always in that order) inform his writing. The disadvantaged teenagers and special needs children he taught for ten years in N.Y.C., as well as Bridges Tutoring students, continue to inspire poems. Bruce was a longtime member of Amnesty International and continues to work for human rights and global peace. He has published articles and poems in environmental magazines, including Earth First and Trilogy, and worked for many years in public libraries and the NCSU library before founding Bridges Tutoring. Widely traveled in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, he has a brother and nephew in Oregon and two step-children.

Readings of his poetry have been given on the radio in Santa Barbara and Taos. Bruce is the Founding Director of Bridges Tutoring, an organization educating students from diverse cultures. He holds a Master of Science degree in Special Education, and completed his Master's Thesis in Creative Writing.
