As a Sociologist, Counselor, and Educator, I have always been interested in human nature. Through my work as a psychotherapist, I strongly believe we have within ourselves the power to induce our own healing; to free ourselves from all of our negative emotions, whether we suffer from fear, anxiety, addiction, or any other emotional limitation. I have seen the transformation in people once they confront and come to a resolution of their emotional issues, but nothing prepared me for the radical changes I saw in my clients after I started using EFT. My personal journey let me to write the book “It is in Your Hands: Emotional Freedom Technique.” This book constitutes an illustrated introduction to EFT with applications.
EFT/TFT techniques came to my life at a crucial time. I was working as a therapist for an institution that served court adjudicated youth. It was a half-way house for girls, ages twelve to seventeen. This was also their last hope before entering the justice system. The girls came from different parts of a city with a myriad of social and emotional problems. Many of the girls were victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. As expected, they harbored anger, resentment, mistrust, sadness, and in many cases uncontrollable rage. This institution offered a comprehensive approach to the girls’ well being. It was a safe haven away from the turbulence of their home and community environment. At that time, this center was undergoing serious financial, administrative, and program restructuring problems. There were many seemingly unresolvable issues of personnel management and relationships. The staff’s morale was at an all-time low. The place was in total chaos.
Almost overnight, I was appointed director of the center. As a consequence, this chaos became my responsibility. The working environment was toxic and I was in the line of fire. I felt extremely tense, trying to work with my own feelings of desperation, as well as having to present an optimistic approach to encourage the teachers, the general staff, the students, and their families. At the same time, I learned that the center was going to be eliminated, closing its doors for good. The students had to be relocated and all of the staff members, including me, were going to be laid off. Faced with all of these misfortunes, and overwhelmed by stress, one of the psychologists of the center suggested to me that I try an unorthodox technique that could help me alleviate the pressure I was feeling. It was an extraordinary gift he gave me. In a very short time, EFT helped me regain my confidence. I also helped several of the staff members to deal with the series of traumatic events we all went through. I stood behind the center supporting the staff and the girls with courage and equanimity until it closed its doors. EFT helped me immensely to cope with many distressful feelings remaining after my departure from the center. I found myself without a job, on Christmas, holding strong feelings of betrayal, anger, and discontent toward the institution. I felt appalled knowing that the center had jeopardized not only the employees’ stability but also the safety and care of the students. It was a real test for EFT effectiveness. Several years have passed since then, I eliminated all those negative feelings, and I have continued to use EFT/TFT with my clients and myself with a resounding success in most cases.
