www.everysecretcrime.com I was six or seven when I wrote my first meaningful story about a rabbit's stolen bicycle. Before I turned 12, I was reading John D. MacDonald and Ross MacDonald. I thought they were brothers. I knew I had to have a cool job like they did. I covered car crashes and fires as a photographer in my teens but the moment I hit 21, I wanted to be a cop. Did that until lured away by the romance (jeez, okay: salary) of the broadcasting business. Started in TV but moved into radio when the camera lights started to reflect off my forehead. Covered politics, then decided I wanted cleaner crime so I moved along to homicides. I became enamored with live reporting from scenes of breaking news. In Chicago, there's a bunch of that. For nearly eighteen years, first at WMAQ and then at WGN, I followed my nose, scanner calls and great tips to some amazing stories. Along the way, I decided to write some of my own.
