As a former educator, diversity trainer and corporate cube farm denizen, I created the Runt Farm series to give children in nontraditional families a sense of their own rightful place in society. The Runt Farmers are a motley bunch who find one another and make a home on an abandoned farm. "Found families" are all around us these days and these adoptive, multi-racial, foster, blended and two mommy or two daddy families are becoming the new norm. My own found family includes people I love, some of whom don't share my last name, my DNA or even the roof over my head. They are wonderful, wacky, quirky, and adorable. Family is key, fundamental and vital and wherever we go -- family happens.
