Background
Information
Kenneth Schwarz, Ph.D. is a psychologist and psychoanalyst with a clinical practice in Connecticut U.S. He is on the Allied Health Staff of Sharon Hospital in Sharon Connecticut. Formerly, he was Director of Psychology at Foothills Family Health Center in Amenia New York, a large family medicine practice, and Assistant Director of Clear View, a day treatment center and school for emotionally disturbed and behaviorally disordered children and their families, now located in Scarborough New York.
Dr. Schwarz's special interests are in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, personal change and goal achievement, adherence to health and learning regimens, using psychology to lose weight, sleep difficulties, relapse prevention, and suicide assessment with rapid reduction of anguish.
In his work on women's weight loss, he applies psychological principles, tried and tested in research and clinical practice, to the main problem a woman has when she tries to lose unwanted weight: "getting herself to do what it takes". That's getting herself to start, stick to it, and keep it off. His use of psychology to lose weight also involves solving problems that get in the way of successful weight loss—those typical weight-loss spoilers like not enough willpower, hard-to-break habits, and emotional eating.
"There are plenty of how-to’s when it comes to dieting and exercise," says Dr. Schwarz. "What’s needed are how-to’s for getting yourself to do what it takes and for dealing effectively with those pesky weight-loss spoilers."
In the Symmetry Press series — Weight-Loss Books for Women —Using Psychology to Lose Weight, Dr. Schwarz's supplies the self-help women need for what is missing in the formula, weight loss = dieting + exercise + ? . Dr. Schwarz's take on self-help is that "self-help isn't really self-help unless someone is also helping you." And he would like to be that someone.
