I have a  background in nursing, in particular Palliative Care, teaching and facilitating nurses and teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have married my experience in Nursing with my experience in English teaching to produce authentic materials for overseas doctors and nurses to practise the communication skills they need in a healthcare environment. Working as a doctor or nurse is often challenging and pressured. There is rarely enough time to think about grammar structures or pronunciation. I have tried to bring in examples of the sorts of conversations between doctors and nurses which I witness as I work on the wards. Some of the dialogues are conversations I have had myself, sometimes I have 'improved' them after reflecting on the effect of my words during the conversation. More and more overseas doctors and nurses move around the world to fill in the shortages which are a feature of medical systems everywhere. Until recently, there has not been much help given to overseas doctors and nurses as they try to navigate through the difficulties of medical language in English. My aim in producing a series like 'English for Medical Purposes' is to provide  workplace-centred practice in the sorts of authentic texts doctors and nurses work with. I use examples of real documentation to highlight the writtten language needed.
