I grew up in Toronto, studied anthropology and linguistics at Victoria College and graduated in medicine at U Toronto in 1958. After 6 years studying surgery in Great Britain, where I married and became a Captain in the British Special Air Service, with a Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons I went with wife and three children to India perform reconstructive surgery on victims of leprosy. I was inspired by Dr. Paul Brand, the first to do leprosy reconstructive surgery and eventually became Surgeon-in-Chief at the hospital he founded in south India.
After my return to Canada I become Associate Professor at U Waterloo, taught for 24 years, established the School of Anatomy and became known as a Renaissance man because of broad interests and widely disparate areas of expertise. Years earlier, as a member of the American Federation of Musicians, I had established a jazz band and club in Kingston, and introduced lacrosse to the children of Toronto by establishing the East Toronto Lacrosse League. While teaching anatomy and sports medicine, I published more than a hundred scientific papers on topics that varied from anatomy, biomechanics, muscle physiology, and surgery of the hand, to work-related injuries, and neuroanatomy of chronic pain. At the same time I ran a part-time clinic for athletes and those injured at work or in motor vehicle accidents; after retirement this became Disability Assessment Services where I currently see clients referred by their lawyers. All this reequires a great deall of expertise in writing. So it is not surprising that after writing truth in these reports I now enjoy writing fiction.
