Elci North is the pen name of an author who usually writes in a vastly different genre.
The idea for The Auction was born on a lazy Sunday morning. My family was lounging in the family room drinking coffee when the conversation turned to undesirable inherited traits. It continued until my middle child quipped, “Where did you guys get me—the baby auction? I’m perfect.” The second he said “baby auction,” my eyes widened and a full plot began spinning in my head.
I originally planned to publish The Auction under my real name, but the character Angelica began speaking in my head, using unsavory language. Nothing upsets my mother more than the F-word, if she knew I used curse words in a book, it would crush her. And if one of her friends read the book and mentioned the swear words to her, well, that would be my mom's version of public humiliation.
On top of that, I typically write in a vastly different genre. Even my son, after reading the first fifty pages, said, “Mom, if I hadn’t watched you type this, I’d never believe you wrote it.”
As far as inspiration goes, I’m a fan of Ayn Rand and George Orwell.
