Michael Martinez first achieved recognition in the field of Internet-based Tolkien research by publishing Parma Endorion: Essays on Middle-earth on the Web in late 1996. Teachers, librarians, and research students around the world began seeking permission to redistribute Martinez' work or use it in their academic projects.
A major presence in the online Tolkien community, Martinez founded one of the first Web-based Tolkien forums, then called the White Council, in 1997. He also founded the first dedicated Lord of the Rings movie news site in February 1998 and, among other events, broke the news that Peter Jackson's movies had been picked up by New Line Cinema two days before all the news media and major Web sites.
As the founding director of Dragon*Con's Tolkiien and Middle-earth fan track, Martinez launched the largest Tolkien-related convention programming in North America in 2000.
