Sonja T. Williams is the creator and author of Aloma and the Red Suitcase and Suni Summers Shares a Story. The stories feature loveable characters that share some of the same character traits of the author, her giving spirit and love for reading. The books center around literacy, character traits and life skills.
A Teacher's Guide based on the SC Curriculum Standards for Language Arts goes along with the book Aloma and the Red Suitcase. Several of her motivational poems appear in Potpourri: A Collection of Literary Works (2005). Her goal is to write books that are good teaching tools to assist children in understanding character traits, life skills, and the importance of reading. At the moment, she is working on several projects.
As an advocate for children's literacy, she believes that learning to read is critical for success in school and later in life. She hopes that parents and guardians help foster the joy of reading by reading to their children at an early age.
Currently, Sonja serves as Treasurer on the Board for the Columbia Writers Alliance. In early 2007, she joined other members of the Alliance and partnered with the University of South Carolina’s Psychology, Arts, Split P Soup and Dance departments to do a pilot study of 20 underserved girls, comparing the effects of creative writing to visual art. From the study, 18 of the 20 girls penned their first anthology entitled, “A Story to Tell, Wordz Up”. The anthology was published by the USC Arts Institutes’ Stepping Stone Press.
Sonja manages STP Publishing and is a freelance editor providing thorough proofreading and editorial services.
Originally from New York, Sonja grew up in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. She lived in Northern Virginia for eight years before moving to Columbia, South Carolina.
