Eventually he started writing plays and then screenplays. Spring 2005 and at the age of 50 he self-published his first novel, On Picking Fruit. Three months later Alyson Books discovered the book and offered Arthur a multiple book deal which included republishing On Picking Fruit (Dec. 2006) and its sequel, Fruit Cocktail (November 2007). Arthur's full length play Birthday Pie won the Key West Theatre Festival's competition for 1998 and premiered his Southern "dramedy" at the Waterfront Playhouse.
