I was a young boy when my family moved to the Pacific Northwest. We lived in Southworth, located on Puget Sound across the bay from Seattle. It was love at first sight.Most of my time was spent out doors fishing, hanging out on the beach, or hiking the many trails of the Olympic Mountains, along with a real passion for bird watching. I have a great list of birds all across America, Alaska, and Hawaii. It was a life that brought me in contact with a diverse group of people who all appreciated the wild and remote place called home. I have also lived in Alaska and later graduated from the University of Washington. After retiring from Atlantic Richfield Co. I developed a new passion: writing. That’s where I find myself today along with my wife Jan. She is my greatest fan, critic, and confidant. Writing The Great Eagle Spirit was a labor of love. There has been a great resurgence and on going search for one’s roots and none more so than the Aleuts of the Aleutian Islands. The people were called Aleuts by Russian traders who plundered their land for otter fur. Their rich culture was ripped apart all in the name of collecting otters. Today the people are known as Unangans after the first people who arrived on the islands thousands of years ago.Having been raised in Washington and later living in the Aleutian Islands in Unalaska I developed a keen appreciation for the Unangan. I have known boys like Carl and tried to write and portray their life from their perspective. I wanted to depict this story with a realistic bent capturing fact, fiction and fantasy.The aim of The Great Eagle Spirit is to cross over the cultural lines in our global community. The sense of who we are transcends all borders and the book could have been written almost anywhere.
