Information
I take stories from life, even when I'm writing sci-fi it's all based on truth. Start with the truth and then the rest is all lies. I've always started with my experiences and gone from there, it grounds everything in reality and makes the story more personal. I read a lot so my list of influences would be too great to be useful.
