In 1349, the Christians of Strasbourg put 2,000 Jews to death in one night by burning. They were afraid Jews were responsible for the Black Death. In 1980, I stood for hours in an NICU holding the tiny hand of my premature daughter completely in love with her and wondering at the range of feelings in our lives. Under other circumstances, I could have been either one of Strasbourg's persecuting Christians or one of its persecuted Jews.
