Harlan Ellison has been a major influence.  From fiction to essay, although I don't always agree with his views, his words always make me think.  I can't think of a greater compliment to give a writer.  That is what I strive to do with my writing.  First and foremost I try to entertain, but also hope that the reader will take a bit of my story to think and talk about later.
