Born in Detroit, Michigan, Louise was the third of five children born to hardworking German immigrant parents, and the first of her family to attend college. She taught elementary school for four years in East Detroit and Grosse Pointe Schools, and then devoted many years to raising her three children. Later she continued her education at the University of Northern Colorado, and received an Ed.D. in Community Psychology.
