I was exposed to the Tao Te Ching and the writings of G.I. Gurdjieff during my early teens. As a result, as a young adult I very actively sought an answer to the question of why I was existing with "higher" reasoning capability, while other creatures weren't necessarily as cognizant of their eventual demises and the hardships of existence.
