Volunteering at the Minnesota Zoo is what inspired the first book, Death Roll. I've always wanted to write about animals and the environment, but never felt qualified to set myself up as an expert and write articles for journals or magazines. But writing a piece of fiction, giving my protagonist my dream job as a zookeeper, was the perfect forum.
