Growing up in Atlantic City I was dazzled by the infinite variety of pleasures, but none more than the beach and ocean. As soon as school let out, I was at the beach every day from morning til almost dinner bell. During those summer years I was enamored by the lifeguards who I viewed as bronzed gods. It was especially thrilling to watch them during one of their many rescues, when they had to battle frightening waves to reach a bather who had gone too far in testing the limits of Father Neptune.
