Margaret Owen grew up in Winnipeg, Canada during the 1940's and 50's. She has been greatly influenced by the events of World War II, when her father, an officer with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, served four years as a prisoner of war following the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese army on Christmas Day, 1941.
