Her first novel, Buffalo Calf Road Woman: The Story of a Warrior of the Little Bighorn, based on a true story, won the prestigious Western Heritage Award for Best Western Novel in 2006 (an honor she shares with James Michener, Barbara Kingsolver and Larry McMurtry). Studied the classics, literature and philosophy, taught humanities and women's studies in college before starting a gender issues consulting/training firm.
