Phillip's work has been influenced by a number of major Australian poets, including Kenneth Slessor and Christopher Brennan, and other poets such as Mallarme and Ernest Dowson of the late nineteenth century. He has developed an abiding interest in both speculative poetry, and contemporary Australian poetry, and he is undertaking a number of editorial, critical and scholarly projects to further the study of both fields.
