How can one explain blue sky to one who has only seen the raincloud?

Tuesday, August 3, 2004

Poem Artwork
what makes me so, so different?
is it the fact that i had to
learn to adjust to things that
were too impolite to explain?

is it the fact that the first
time ever i experienced feeling
like an object, that i should
accept my innocent guilt?

what makes you, yes. . .YOU
so very different?

is it a fact that your
leave it to beaver family
in white suburbia was too
good to feel the sting of
an undeserved stare?

is it the fact that you never
rode the school bus alone, even
when pack'd full?
or never talked about
pain in swallowing,

what about the fake smiles,
the whispers, or the
fantasies of 7th grade
boys dipping immature
white pulp bananas,
into the depths
of semi-sweet dark

chocolate

that leaves
slippery feelings upon
contact, nothing that resembles
her-she sweetness,

OH, that's not enough proof?

well then why don't i just
unzip your pride and blow your mind
with the undisputed tidbit that
you blame each and every one
of your societal woes
on my hormones?

Powerful words here. I read the article too. Most of it is fairly accurate, but I did notice a few things... It said that most women leave an average of five times before ending the relationship. (References are dated 1990-1997) Current statistics are that a woman leaves eight times before ending the relationship - an indicator of how rampant the abuse really is. Also, contrary to what the article indicates, shelter is available for women - and not just short term. Fortunately, times have been changing; we work regularly and diligently with women who experience emotional abuse and no physical affects. And I do know that the agency I work for is not alone in our serious attempts to help women leave, regardless of circumstance.

Good post, Cynth'ya.

7th Grade Boys of any culture are usually the worst. Luckily, many of them grow up and realize how truly ignorant they were.

Turn that around, Cynth'ya. Think how low the self esteem of one who needs to humiliate others. They're very pathetic when you think it that way. Good, strong poem.
