not your average color'd chics

This is dedicated to a dear dear friend Dr. Melvia Miller (on the left), a native of Muncie IN who just lost her mother (see poem "Elizabeth's Eyes").
Melvia is a wonderful author who knows exactly where I stand, and knows that when it comes to Truth--no matter how unpopular-- Truth will always have a fan club. Her book "Middletown Roots" tells the straight up truth about the backwardness of Muncie Indiana, and why so many people of color often vacate before they suffocate in the quagmire of uninclusive stagnation.
Hats off to you my sistah Melvia. May God bless you richly in your purpose, and may you find peace and solace in the days ahead.

together we can
change the way
the world sees shades of
color
we take a stand
and hold a hand
when no one else will
bother
we leap past fears
and doubters' jeers
because it really
matters,
regardless of
the critics' sneers
our hopes remain
unshatter'd
and still we find
that Truth needs time
to heal all broken
spirits
for we will always
pen the words of sense
for those who'll
hear it
tho' days are short
we can't resort
to sentiments of
anguish
for when a fool
believes false lies
those lies
become their language
and so we'll script
on glistening wings
'til bound are free from
bondage
for with persistence
freedom flies
and celebrates
true homage
