To capture the innocence of child-like love once more. . .

Poem Artwork

we were only both in second grade,
but Tommy was the first. . .

walked every spring morning
to my white house on the corner,

a sturdy steel fence
around our yard
with white painted corner posts
supported a steel mesh fence,

it protected us
from the neighbors' trash
protected our white house
from outsiders. . .

Tommy held my hand, and my friends
laughed at us. . . called us

chocolate and vanilla

me in my dresses from Jack and Jill,
ribbons hanging from my twin ponytails,

and Tommy in his dungarees and plaid long sleeved shirt, Opie Taylor haircut,

and he didn't care that he was
shorter than me . . .

then one morning on the way
to Westvale

Tommy stole a chocolate kiss
off the corner of my left cheekbone

second graders don't learn such things
in the 1960s

Emmett was killed for looking,
but nothing would happen to Tommy,
and I knew I couldn't tell my Mama

but somebody told, and from that day
on. . . Tommy took another way to school, or he moved, or somethin'

but nothing was the same except for our
innocent cultural transgression

and the with steel fence,
held together with its
white painted corner posts,
that kept the neighbor's trash
out of our yard,

. . .was now a yard
unwelcomed to outsiders

Young children are never prejudiced. They love unconditionally until some messed up adult tells them that they are wrong for loving a particular human being with the purity of heart that can only come from kids. This was a beautiful write Cynth'ya. I loved it. Michelle

Oh, Cynth'ya... 'out of the mouths of babes'... forgive me for yet another cliche: 'and a child shall lead them'... I'm deflated, as well as filled by how your capture of a child's voice packs a far more deafening impact than any that we adults could have... in your grown-up body, you have brought a poem, a piece of truth that should resonate throughout the world. 'Innocence lost' has never held such impact for me. You are, indeed, a voice to be reckoned with. katy xox.

Great bittersweet. Strange, the fences we build around our lives. Most don't need to be there.

(((cyth'ya)))

o, this is bittersweet...i remember my first love, his name was (is) mike. poor boy was ugly to everyone, but to me, he was beautiful. he was the first one that didn't tease me or call me names; he treated me with dignity and respect. he had the most incredible sense of humor...he could make me laugh when i felt like crying after suffering another horrid day at school (because of the bullies). my mom made me break up with him because of his friends...i miss him, still. wonder what happened to him...i'll have to look him up. thanks :)

thanks for the memory jog. (((HUGS))) and love, karla. :)

A profund bittersweet childhood remembrance, Cynth'ya, that you will obviously never forget. If only adults were as understanding as children.
