Poem Artwork

For Ruby

12 christmases ago
i recollect a voice that
melt'd icy telephone wires
that bent to intonations
of your laugh. . . and oh
what a laugh it was. . .
it was a laugh that
lov'd to recall the days
of my childhood, and your
midlife youth . . . days
when you swore that i
always ate too many sweets
with crust that were hand-crimp'd
in the most holy manner. . .your kitchen
was as important as church. . .
and you kept on baking egg custard
and pound cake that would just
saturate your mouth with golden greed,
and yam pies and bread pudding
chock full of just a hint of rum
and a vineyard full of grapes convert'd
by your gospel into sacrificial raisins,
and the nilla wafers that i used to
eat out of the box before you had enough
to go around the edges of your angelic
fluffy banana pudding. . .
yes indeed ma'am,
you were everybody's honey mama
granddaddy's sugar, and i,
. . .i was your most anxious grandbaby bee

11 christmases ago
it was your 64th wedding
celebration, but one of you
separat'd themselves from the
matrimonial silver cord and
flew away. . . damn cancer. . .
but it was all good because now
there are candy cane in his hands
as he soft shoes in Heaven, playing
old Alabama tunes on a golden mouth harp
and we talk'd about how his presence
was brighter than the snowflakes falling
in the moonlight, landing on asphalt glass

10 christmases ago
most everybody was scatter'd
and the closest scent of their being
was by the now-dry'd up saliva that
was a human seal of approval when
they lick'd moist tongue-tips across
envelopes of many colors that carried
"Season's Best" or "God Bless Your Family"
and the late ones would come saying
"Happy New Year". . . and you'd love it
when even in my 20s and 30s i'd diligently
search for the scotch-brand tape that stuck
better then than it does now that it, like everything
else now manufactur'd in China,
or Sri Lanka. . .but that's okay. . .
everybody needs a little christmas in their life
'cause even if it's working for 2 bucks a day; i'm sure
they must be thankful for all the american shoppes
who stock containers full of plastic holiday cheer
but at least your christmases were real

and even thru the decade that has vanish'd
as quickly as those who once believ'd in
department store santas, those christmases
for you are no more. . . for now you fight
to remember the present. . .the past is a blur,
the future is uninsur'd. . .and every day you
wonder why God let you remain in a world
that you forgot exists. . .the past and the present
have collided. . .and the future is a cruel joke
and regardless of the number of times
you do not recall the seconds that pass your eyes,
at least when my breath meets yours,
we both know the scent of our love stays strong,
and christmas will be merry for all time

Dear Cynth'ya, A most touching write. While no one can understand the reason for this cruel and sad disease, there is always something we can learn...our own strength and compassion when it comes to caring for a loved one. Love her madly, for she is your Mom no matter her state of mind. Hang on to the memories...they are your link to her past. One day she will be made whole again...and you two will laugh together. The dreaded disease will be no more.
The kindness in your heart flows gently through your poem.

God Bless
Lena

A very heartfelt stack of paragraphs, Cynth'ya...I am quoting a few lines of my own on Alzheimer's I have in a storyline from my novel FROM THE CONVENT TO THE RAWHIDE: THE SAGA OF SADIE CADE AND VI MONTANA.

"Sister Pish is reckoning with an evil force. There comes a devastating loss of the higher thought process and a weakened sense of the power of prayer. Sister Pish bows her head.

"'A person should always live.' the Church of Pish instructs, 'as if the end of days and the Last Judgment could arrive tomorrow.'"

"Troubling signs, memory lapse, confusion, and erroneous perceptions of reality, what we know today as Alzheimer's, the black dungeon of Hell. With terror and panic in her eyes, she silently weeps."

Warmly, and with keeping in the good graces of the Holiday season

I am having a hard time reading this heart touching offering, as I just lost my mother last week, after years of living with Alzheimer's. You have the golden gift of expressing your feelings with grace and tenderness, where when I wrote about my feelings they were filled with anger and fustration at the futility of this illness. You humble me with your stunning take on what was...not what is. I will make a copy of this so that I may read this again when my emotions are not quite so raw...thank you Cynth'ya for this offering
love and peace, Carole

Cynth'ya. Sounds like you had such wonderful, colorful, tastey, warm family Christmases. It must be so hard when all of that fades into a memory. I never had Christmas like you describe. So now, my husband go over to "Cat and Dody's" on Christmas eve. We smell and taste entirely too much of Cat's cooking. The whole huge family is there and friends drop in. We're always the only white people but nobody seems to notice. They are family and we are "home" for Christmas. Wonderful, exceptional write, Sis!

Cynth'ya,
This is a stunning write, in the 1st part
Your discription of the kitchen culinary expert
who pleased all present, sounded like my wife
just a few years ago, when Our children and their kids
Spend the Holidays with us
The 2nd part is like a gudie book to reality
how each start teaching their kids the facts of family togtherness
During the holidays, and stay home celebrating
Now we vist them.
The 3rd part, brought a tear to my eyes because
you discribed my mother.
How she would look at me with a lovely smile
Upon her beautiful aging face
Wondering and asking my sister, "who Is that man?"
I last remembered asking her for a dance.
Now I sit here in front of my screen
wondering where we'll spend our holidays this year.

Love & Peace
William

Cynth'ya, this write brings to light what those left in the midst of disillusion are forced to feel. Loved ones still alive but gone are their voices of remember, but i think they still remember...

"...you do not recall the seconds that pass your eyes,
at least when my breath meets yours,
we both know the scent of our love stays strong,
and christmas will be merry for all time"

...this ending is a magnificent ray of hope and gives all of us the peace amongst such turmoil. Amen to your thoughts!
Love and Peace~

Cynth'ya, this is a tremendous poem -- you've brought tears to my eyes, it's so touching. Alzheimers is such a debilitating disease and you've described exactly how it robs our loved ones, yes, but also you've described how it robs us of our loved ones. Again, a tremendous poem.
Love,
CJ

A nostalgic write with a sadness in your heart to see your mother reduced to apathy and no longer aware of the love she gave so free when her mind was strong and vibrant but now lost in just a blank stare. The Christmas season can indeed be sad but we have to be thankful for all the ones that weren't. You paint the picture in this write with your loving heart.
