downtown louisville got its derby-time fill,
so hungry for quartet of magikal mastery
begging them with full abandon to whip up
nonstop batches of dreamscape tunes
that woke them up on the other side
of classical, every chord breathing
an ancient ambience beneath the glassworks

some might describe it as
nothing less than
a creamy cadence of
exquisite etherial musical pie,
with the ingredients of
toe tappin' tempos that
bubble and pulse with a
a delectable heat only known to those
who know how to permeate
concrete walls in the core
of  Market Street cool heat

others just look'd beyond the foggy glass
in the misty spring night
trying to figure out out a box step rhythm
with a derby mentality. . .
this fine parade of strums, drums,
scales of runs of hot vibrato yum yums
creating a vapor of freedom sounds
heard by the ears of the ones who once
suppress'd such so-call'd "boo-yah" . . .
sophisticat'd staccato soul, dipp'd in
a big vat of high caloric finger plucking
by a veteran velvet bass in a league
of his own, training up a trio of
 babes in the era of mp3 digitalis automatus
and those who peer in from the outer limits
of do-re-mi and fa-so-la-tee dah
cannot explain in college logic
just what is taking place before
their very ears and are left speech-less

for when Uncle Buster's be-bop babes deliver,
even the white lights rock under
notes of blue in an ultra 21C 
shock wave. . . and its tunes massage
the temples, coats the throat  experience
in such a sexy j-j-j-jazz-zay way, and
we all end up so much cooler while our
spirits chant breezy, colorful, easy blues
in a color that just feels so doggone delicious,
and we just can't help it, those of us who
like the taste of bluzy-breezy-hot chocolato,
please come back, carry us to the very next slice,
not likely to be serv'd at your mama's next
white hat parlor party.

READ ABOUT A NEW FRIEND MY HUSBAND AND I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING, GREETING and yes you know this little author HAD to get a hug. . . he hugs nice too! I call "My Uncle Buster, the Baddest Bassist with the cutest smile you ever heard y'all."

Buster Williams appeared in various television shows, including Johnny Carson " Tonight Show' with Errol Garner; the Jay Leno "Tonight Show" where he rendered some of his splendid original compositions, performing with the Branford Marsalis Tonight Show Band; he has also appeared in Sesame Street with Joe Williams; A&E (Arts and Entertainment) with Bill Cosby; The Joan Rivers Show with Bill Cosby; The Andy Williams Show with Nancy Wilson; the Joey Bishop Show; the Grammy Awards with Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and Bobby McFerrin; the Mike Douglas Show; the Today Show; etc.

A list of his awards include Grammy Award in 1979; the Min-On Art Award; the SGI Glory Award the SGI Cultural Award; the RVC Corporation RCA Best Seller Award; NEA recipient; New York Fellowship Grant; 5 Stars from Downbeat magazine for the album "Crystal Reflections" listed in Who's Who in Black America; and numerous proclamations.

Buster Williams or Charles Anthony Williams, Jr. came from a musical family, his father was a bassist, who during the night used to play gigs at the local clubs. "My father was my teacher. He would prepare my lessons for me,\\'' Buster recounts, "and when I got home from school I was supposed to practice, then he would listen while he was eating his dinner. It was an unwritten law that I had to play it right or hear about it. I was going to be the best. I had no choice. In those days, instead of a two car family, we were a two bass family. My father was a fan of Slam Stewart, and he strung his basses the way Slam did. Instead of the regular G-D-A-E, he strung a high C; ie,C-G-D-A. Adding the C string puts the playing of higher-pitched passages at a more comfortable position. Of course, when he decided to teach me he restrung one of his basses in the traditional manner for me. He told me, 'If I re-string my bass for you, you'd better be serious!'". And Buster really took it seriously.

What makes him outstanding throughout the jazz world, is his deep, flexible, springy, and his creative way of playing.
