Before getting into the poem below--I had the privilege on one day a few weeks ago to speak to one of our esteemed (not in the government's eyes) veterans on a bus--because he could not afford a car--he was telling them (the VA) that the medication they gave him costs more than his government check and he'd have nothing to live on. His electricity was cut off because his thank-you check from the government didn't cover his bills. Congresspeople will not call him back. He has called his Congressman, and is trying to find money to go to Washington because HIS Congressman/Senator does not listen nor care. (Clue--put whomever in the white house if we will--it's the Congress who has the ultimate power--grill your congressional candidates.)

This man has had promises of calls returned but only gets as close as a form letter with a stamp on it that the American people have paid for in taxes. He says the government has created a situation for many veterans to come home and either commit murder-suicide or mass terror on the streets of our own country because they cannot get the medical care they need. He said our V.A. system is broken, and that it is going to be literally hell to pay because innocent people and families will suffer due to an surge in domestic violence and violence in our schools. There will be a rise in crimes like robbery and rape because people who fought for this country are feelig cheated by the government and that all one particular female candidate cares about (this is him talking, not my opinion) is power, not people and he's afraid that veterans concerns will just get the brush off as usual.

He alludes to the fact that America is heading towards a police-controlled state not much different that nations where people are put last, not first. Police will shoot first and ask questions later. And on the public bus in Muncie IN, he even told me that if he did not have his medication he could literally lose his mind. But the government gave him a medicine substitute that did not work.

Then I thought about mandatory health care. I thought about my first cousin who for 8 years was MIS-diagnosed for stroke problems when he had aggressive Multiple Sclerosis from age 39 thru 45 and had to be put in a nursing home because the hospital did not know what to do with him. Now after getting his physical life back, I watch him and realize what the late Richard Pryor's family had to go through with his disease as a family member.

I hear promises from the platforms and people say they cannot make up their minds.

Tiger Woods has a quote he uses--'We all have to make decisions but in the end, our decisions make US.'

We all need to think about what is really important. Our decision in the May 6 primary--especially for Indiana--will not effect who moves into the white house, but who moves America back to caring about each other.

What is equally important is how we ask ourselves the question: 'How do people react on a one to one situation with people and do they seem calm under pressure? Do they play fair or do they play dirty? The white house is already dirty enough and only the people can vote to clean it up by using the power of the vote not to make history, but to make a difference It's not day one that is important. It's the first 100 days of bills that Congress--house representatives and senators who placate to sideline committees, governors and mayors that will change the direction of our nation--county by county--district by district, not the white house.

We need to look not at what someone did, but what a person is supported by their family to do. We need to remember that married couples who occupy the white house are human, and test the unity of the couple for the good of all people. This is about more than winning an election. It's about reconstructing a broken nation.

Who is the best congressional person you and I can elect to be in tune with a president who listens to people beyond party lines, who does not throw mud in the face of someone they claim to admire, and who will bring people together without tearing the left and the right sides of the United States congress apart playing political games with lobbyists and special interests?

Lobbyists are not going to care about anyone except the companies who pay them to be their cronies, regardless of whom is in the white house. It stops when the president we elect is held to the accountability to the people who elected them and says 'no more' to the people who feather their politically ambitious nests.

These were his feelings after having fought for our nation.

If you are a veteran reading this...you heard it from me first--I'm voting for what is best for you in all of our elections because you cared enough to take care of our country.

On a personal note--Sometimes, even before gasoline prices went up--and their going up has absolutely nothing to do with any political candidate but the powers that be in the current white house and congress and the lobbyists who are paying for votes and delegates with money whom some have chosen to accept--I choose to walk about a mile from my home to the bus stop. Our home is bordering a public housing neighborhood.

My husband and I know many veterans who need to live in public housing--many single parents and elderly but they often have to live under bridged (one we call 'the bridge man' right here in Muncie Indiana) and others who have lost limbs not to mention my own brother in law who had to fight the veterans administration just to have a simple lung transplant for both lungs--not thanks to Agent Orange and Viet Nam where he served in Special Forces.

My brother is law is one year younger than me--and he knows first hand how the V.A. would sooner have let him die as opposed to him having to literally fight for his life by calling congresspersons and heads of state who have no clue about what goes on in veterans lives.

(My question is--can our president in 2009 represent a broad spectrum of people's needs and not do what it takes just to get in and then forget about us by listening to people who feather their pockets?)

God bless America, for God is the only one who can choose to bless us through our love and committment to do what is right, or God truly will damn us because of our selfishiness and our greed.

Very informative write. I pray that God will bless our Nation and you are right we should support our troops and vets when they get home. They were willing to fight for rights some people take for granted. Keep your voice strong and active... It is appreciated.

Our vets deserve nothing less than the very best! How can we treat them this way; it's an abomination and should NOT be tolerated!! Enough is ENOUGH!!

If we don't learn to control our Congresspersons in the House and in the Senate, making certain that they obey the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, >>> IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO PLAYS WITH DOGS IN THE OVAL OFFICE < < < ... Cynth'ya,

Thank you for posting this - according to the March/April issue of DAV (Disabled American Vets) magazine that I picked up this morning, 1 in 4 homeless are Veterans. 1 in 4 - I'm very nearly there.

How can Congress continue to justify, for themselves, annual pay raises to adjust for the rates of inflation, when those who served our nation HONORABLY are struggling to make it?

How can members of Congress get top of the line medical care and cheap insurance, when our soldiers/sailors/airmen have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get the dregs of medical treatment for injuries sustained as a result of their service?

This should not be - we owe our Veterans the best - they gave their best - the least we should do!!!!!!!!!

Living on $230.00 a month. THAT'S IT. My pay went up $5.00 from last year. How is that going to buy food?

There are a million more stories worse than mine - ENOUGH is ENOUGH. Powerfully penned wake up call -

You've penned one near and dear to my heart - as the daughter of/sister of/niece of/cousin of Veterans, and a Veteran, myself, you know how I feel. :(
