Melancholy Moon

For a time, I lived in a 3rd floor condo overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. My back patio and my bedroom both faced the water and I enjoyed many evenings and mornings looking out over the water watching the moon or the sun come up over the water. Both are mesmerizing sights which remain a worthwhile memory long after the occasion. I always wanted to write a poem about the experience, however it just never seemed that I could do the sensations justice. After a number of failed attempts,,,, finally, I feel that this one is getting close.

MELANCHOLY MOON

Sitting on the balcony,
enjoying the suns last rays,
fending off the melancholy
experienced in recent days.
Enjoying an evening smoke
with a glass of favored brew,
love songs in the background
intensifying thoughts of you.

The sun has lost its glory,
yet the sky is still ablaze,
looking out across the water,
peering through the purple haze.
The waves are gently crashing
as the moon begins to rise,
Mother Nature’s beauty
unfolds before my eyes.

The waves are iridescent
and as darkness now prevails
a sailor in the bay
at long last drops his sails.
Mesmerized by all this beauty,
music created by sea and sand,
alone with lonely thoughts
not quite as was planned.

Florescent flashes catch my eye
as waves gently roll ashore,
time is not their enemy
they’ll continue evermore.
Just as any campfire
attracts your eyes to the flame,
these psychedelic waves
act pretty much the same.

The moon, in all it’s glory,
now lights up the sky,
but you’re not here with me
and still the question why.
Alone here on this balcony
long after the suns last rays,
it’s that melancholy moon
often experienced in recent days.

It's the loneliness that can devalue even the most beautiful scenery.

For me, this paints a picture of a lonely man, surrounded by beauty, yet still missing the love he once had. This is truly a 'melancholy' write.
