Hospital scene.  A mother and her faternal twins at the bedside of their dying father.  Believing him near death, and unaware of their conversation. Never taking the time to glance at the man on the pillow.

The Man On The Pillow

He lay dying upon the bed
Listening still to all they said
Believing that he could not hear
Assumed his mind, was quite unclear

The voices mixed yet held their tag
As came the voice of wifely nag
Fraternal twins, the selfish set
Put out, by his lingered breath

How much longer can he last
Question thought and cruelly asked
No one cared about his pain
Anxious for financial gain

Time he thought, now to move on
Better death, when love is gone
Death comes slowly like a dream
Life is shorter, than it seems

Closed his eyes, he sighed and died
When suddenly eyes opened wide
A rush of air,  the clearest breath
He was alive, escaping death

Wow

He sat up upon the bed
Arms wide spread, forgive all said
Looking into stranger's eyes
Who looked back with shocked surprise

The laughter and embarrassment
Was at the moment, heaven sent
Avaricious foolish three
Were not this patient's family

Three absorbed by selfish gloom
Waiting for the hand of doom
Never gave a single glance
Towards the man beneath the lamp

The man on the pillow

Lovely twist at the end. Such situations are not uncommon alas. I believe Moliere wrote a play on such avarice. Great poem, Victor

Anita, this hits so close to home. Your depiction of human nature is so right on. Sooner or later, most of us will be on that pillow.

While you hit upon something despicable and all too common, you do it with irony and a great sense of humor...punishing those who need it...great story telling, great poem.

Anita, this can really happen, as I'm sure you know. Having worked in hospitals I've seen versions of it. We can laugh but it isn't really funny it is horror! Superb poem on the topic!

Reminded me of the dying Scotsman who upon hearing the undertaker tell his weeping wife the price of the funeral, jumped up out of bed and lived another 20 years.

Anita conchita, queen of the celestial sphere ...

You had me going on this one. You really did.

What a bloody foopah the avaricious foolish three made. This was delightfully humorous and at the same time sobering - that kind of crapola really happens in hospitals.
