Lover’s Rain

A poem about the power of love and the danger that the weather can bring.

Poem Artwork

With water streaming high to low
From billowed clouds to ground below
The two would walk together, free
As much in love as souls could be
They danced and sang in beaten time
Beneath the raindrops’ rhythmic rhyme
The world was clean; the future clear
But soon, each drop would bring a tear.

The sidewalk, dampened by the mist
That silently served to persist
Allowed the couple time to breathe
The sights and smells, so soon to leave
Their plans had led them to the park
But once again, the sky turned dark
They could have left but yet, they stayed
To share the day, the Lord had made.

The two entered the park at four
The rains, again, began to pour
They found their shelter ‘neath the tree
But, soon they’d meet their destiny
The mist, so gentle, calm, and light
That once was such a blessed sight
Was now a force of reckoning
Beneath the thunder’s beckoning.

Together, the two felt secure
So certain that they would endure
Whatever this storm chose to bring -
The weather did not mean a thing
For these two souls were bound by love
As granted by the Lord above
And they were sure that come what may
Their love would always pave the way.

Then, with a flash, their world was changed
And evermore, ‘twas rearranged
When from the sky, a lightning bolt
Pelted the tree with a sharp jolt
The damage to the tree was much
And soon after, the bolt had touched
The site where sheltered love had been
A time for mourning did begin.

The girl had burns but still survived
Her lover, though, was not revived
And so, each day, when clouds appear
She walks alone; his spirit near
Back to the place, they chose to be
Where love and life were once carefree
To think not of the stress and pain
But to recall their lover’s rain.

I had heard of Lover's Leap, but yours is the first I've heard of Lover's Rain, since Elvis had me walking in "...the cold, Georgia rain."

Sounds like a true story...

Jill,

Lightning may be pretty to look at, but it is dangerous, and a tree is one of the worst places a person can be when it is storming out. You may hvae saved some lives today! Very well done; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Burleson, Karen Lynn. :(

Sweet/sour penning this day, Jill, and one that tugs at the heartstrings, although there are those who say I don't have a heart, therefore how could this happen? Still, there is a faint murmuring within my chest cavity as I read your words. Good.
