Ode to Wrigley Field

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

An ode to one of Major League Baseball most historic wonders, the beautiful Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Poem Artwork

Beneath the vast Chicago skies
Resides a place, so rare and true
It is the home of pop-up flies
Where childhood dreams begin anew
An ancient wonder for the game
A testament to days long past
That evermore will stake its claim
In history, quite unsurpassed.

The grass, so fresh and neatly mowed
The ivy crisp, the scoreboard green
Provides a sweet, humble abode
For our dear pastime to be seen
Its small ambiance speaks of joy
Its presence evermore defines
Why man and woman, girl and boy
See it as “The Friendly Confines.”

Nestled between Sheffield and Clark
West Addison and Waveland, too
You’ll find one of the best ballparks -
One worthy of all credit due
The heart of Wrigley lies within
Its legacy, its team, its stands
From the time each season begins
Until the last batter is fanned.

Never been there, but the venerable old field is done proud by you.

I spent a great part of my youth sitting in those old ivy covered bleachers; and I truly hope old Wrigley Field lives on forever. We seem to have a tendency in this country to bring in the 'modern' wrecking ball far too often, instead of preserving our history.

I love baseball and worked for the California Angels and Gene Autry in my immortal days. I've been a baseball nut since then. I also love minor league ball. They play harder and are hungry. That's the lesson here...be hungry for your fate and then you may see it one day to be a positive. The poem is a wonderul tribute to Wrigley Field. Well done.

Wrigley should be named a National Monument if it hasn't been already. The first time I visited Chicago, on the top of my list, even before heading out to do all that great shopping, dining, dancing, shows and nightlife, was to see Wrigley Field. Nice job, Jill!
Take care,
Sherry

Jill,

Having never visited Wrigley, you bring all of it vividly to mind, could hear the crack of the bat, and smell hotdogs and crackerjack in the air. Thank you, exquisite poetry!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Yes, the old park has always had a special place in my heart, as did/do the Cubs. Also the second best play-by-play announcer, Harry Caray did his thing there. Sorry, but I think Vin Scully from LA (dem bums) was the best.
